The Eight Diagrams represent the ancient Chinese way of classifying all things in their understanding of the universe.

 

One represents the Kan trigram, located in the north;
Two represents the Kun trigram, located in the southwest;
Three represents the Zhen trigram, located in the east;
Four represents the Xun trigram, located in the southeast;
Five represents the Center;
Six represents the Qian trigram, located in the northwest;
Seven represents the Dui trigram, located in the west;
Eight represents the Gen trigram, located in the northeast;
Nine represents the Li trigram, located in the south.

From the perspective of cosmology
The Qian trigram stands for heaven,
the Kun trigram for earth,
the Zhen trigram for thunder,
the Xun trigram for wind,
the Kan trigram for water,
the Li trigram for fire,
the Gen trigram for mountain,
and the Dui trigram for marsh.
From the perspective of family
The Qian trigram denotes the father,
the Kun trigram the mother,
The Zhen trigram is the eldest son,
the Xun trigram the eldest daughter,
The Kan trigram is the middle son,
the Li trigram the middle daughter,
The Gen trigram is the youngest son,
and the Dui trigram the youngest daughter.
From the perspective of animals
The Qian trigram corresponds to the horse,
 the Kun trigram to the ox,
The Zhen trigram to the dragon,
the Xun trigram to the rooster,
The Kan trigram to the pig,
the Li trigram to the pheasant,
The Gen trigram to the dog,
and the Dui trigram to the goat.

The Qian trigram corresponds to the head,
the Kun trigram to the abdomen,

and the Dui trigram to the mouth.
From the perspective of movement
The Qian trigram represents the firm and strong;
the Kun trigram represents the yielding and compliant.
The Zhen trigram represents movement;
the Xun trigram represents entering.
 The Kan trigram represents falling or trapping;
the Li trigram represents clinging or depending.
The Gen trigram represents stopping;
the Dui trigram represents joy.

The Qian trigram stands for the ruler,
and the Kun trigram stands for the multitude.
